Odd Dog Yarns was created by Sara, an avid crocheter and (eventually) knitter based in Calgary, Alberta. Sara loves making things with her hands, but quickly realized that her imagination worked much faster than her hands, hooks, and needles. There were simply too many beautiful colours and textures to play with, and not nearly enough hours in the day. So she did the sensible thing and decided to dye her own yarn. Naturally.

And thus, Odd Dog was born.

At Odd Dog Yarns, we delight in experimenting with colours, textures, and the occasional happy accident. We create small-batch, hand-dyed yarn that reflects the joy (and mild obsession) behind making it. Our goal is to grow a welcoming community of fellow yarn enthusiasts—a place to explore, be inspired, and maybe fall a little bit more in love with yarn all over again.

How is hand dyed yarn created?
Hand dyed yarn is created through a process of carefully applying dyes to yarn by hand, resulting in unique and vibrant color variations. Odd Dog yarns are made in very small (teeny tiny) batches, and although we try to be as consistent as possible, each skein is unique. We think that's pretty cool!
What projects are suitable for hand dyed yarn?
Hand dyed yarn is perfect for a wide range of projects, including shawls, scarves, sweaters, and accessories. The unique color variations add depth and interest to your finished pieces, making them truly one-of-a-kind.
Pro tip: when using hand died variegated yarns for a larger project, we recommend alternating rows with different skeins to get the more random colour effect.
Can I request a custom hand dyed yarn?
We're not currently taking commissions for custom colours because we cannot commit to specific timeframes right now. However, we welcome suggestions and sharing inspiration! If you make a suggestion you may just see the yarn of your dreams appearing on the page!
How accurate are the colours shown?
The images of the products shown on this website are as accurate as possible, taken in natural daylight without any filters or modifications. However, the photos don't really do the colours justice and they tend to be more vibrant in real life. The colours may also look different on different mobile and computer screens
How do I care for the yarn?
Store your yarn in a dry, preferably air-tight container. Finished garments typically need to be hand washed and laid flat to dry, but we give the washing instructions with each skein, as they are provided by the bare yarn supplier. It's a good idea to wash your garment on it's own the first couple times, especially for extra-vibrant and saturated colours. Pinks and reds are particularly known to bleed.
Does the yarn contain dog hair?
No.
